History

In the fall of 2002, the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) jointly decided to stand for unity and cooperation among Christians by starting a new, confederated church in the greater Boston area. In this spirit of unity, Hope Church was born so that each denomination may grow in faith, join each other to combat social injustice, proclaim the gospel, and pursue wholeness by being church together.

Jesus' prayer "that we all be one" is the founding prayer of both denominations. At Hope, we are working hard to do justice to this shared vision by bringing the strengths of both the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) together in partnership to share faith, ministry, service, and worship.

Both the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are mainline, diverse denominations, and both believe in preserving the autonomy of local churches when it comes to faith and practice.
