Our History
Hope Central Church is the newly-formed union of two church communities: Central Congregational Church, a church with a history of nearly 150 years in Jamaica Plain, and Hope Church, a vibrant new church started 7 years ago.
Central Congregational Church was founded in 1853, and has long history of service to the Jamaica Plain community. Our church building at 85-87 Seaverns Ave. was built by this congregation in the 1935. Central Congregational joined the United Church of Christ and became an Open and Affirming church.
Hope Church was founded in 2002 as a joint church start of the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Its vision was one of a welcoming, diverse community of people, who could learn and grow together in faith, love, and joy. The church grew quickly, and consequently moved its worship between three locations in Jamaica Plain and Roslindale. Founding pastor Rev. Elizabeth Myer-Boulton served from 2002 to 2008, and Rev. Wendy Miller Olapade as interim pastor since 2008.
