Labyrinth
A labyrinth is a geometric pattern that has one well-defined pathway winding its way to the center and back out again. Unlike a maze, there are no tricks in the pattern, no wrong turns, and no dead ends. It is not designed to confuse or to bewilder.
Labyrinths have an ancient history and are found in almost all cultures. For Christians, the labyrinth has been used as a tool to guide healing, deepen self knowledge, and empower creativity. It calms people in the throes of life transitions and helps them to see their lives in the context of a path or a pilgrimage.
There is an old Latin adage, “solvitur ambulando.” Translated into English, it means something like this: you can sort it out by walking; you can work it out, find it, unknot it, and free it. In short, walking the labyrinth can be a helpful tool to quiet the mind, open the heart, and bring peace to the soul.
